Background Check and Concussion Training

Coach Requirements

Thank you for volunteering to coach with S.P.O.R.T.S.!

Background Checks

S.P.O.R.T.S. requires all head and assistant coaches to complete a background check and a concussion training course (link below) every three years except for football coaches/assistant coaches who are required to complete a different concussion training course every two years*.  Once selected to coach, the S.P.O.R.T.S. office will determine which coaches require a new or updated background check and concussion training.  If a background check is needed, volunteers will be emailed by our background check provider, The Advocates at Verified Volunteers, directly with a link to complete the screening.  If concussion training is required, the S.P.O.R.T.S. office will contact you via email.

Concussion Training
PLEASE NOTE:  FOOTBALL COACHES ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A DIFFERENT CONCUSSION TRAINING COURSE*

All other coaches are required to complete a concussion education course every three years.  Coaches must complete the CDC Online Concussion Course (link below) to fulfill their concussion education requirement.  The CDC course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and needs to be completed before the first practice.  After completion of the online course, please email your completion certificate to training@hsesports.org, fax to 845-5687 or drop off at the S.P.O.R.T.S. office.
*Football coaches and board members are required to take a different Football Safety Training course every two years.  The commissioner will email the course information to coaches.

After completion of the online course, please email your completion certificate to training@hsesports.org

If you are a returning coach, please contact the S.P.O.R.T.S. office, 317-845-5582, to determine when your background check or concussion training expires.

CDC Online Concussion Course Technical Requirements
The CDC Online Concussion Course performs best on an up-to-date computer (for example, one with a multi core processor) with a broadband internet connection, as well as an up-to-date web browser and operating system.  While this training does run on mobile devices, a printer connection or a PDF writer will be required to print your completion certificate.  Older computers may crash while using the training resulting in a loss of progress.  Progress is not tracked or saved.  Do not close or refresh your browser as this will restart the course.  If you need to exit the training, you will be returned to the beginning of the course.  Please also feel free to contact DUIPinquiries@cdc.gov if you are having trouble accessing the course.
